Home town Coral Gables
My home town of Coral Gables is not unlike the medieval walled cities of Italy in that there are specific entranceways to the city center;
however our entrances have not had to fend off warring tribes nor prevent neighboring cities from invading.
Instead, they were designed by city founder George Merrick to impart beauty and charm to the Mediterranean themed city.
The entrances mark the access points to the city and highlight the lush tropical landscape.
The four main entrances are Granada Entrance, designed by architect Denman Fink and landscape architect Frank Button.
Country Club Prado.
Italian walled cities such as Lucca and San Gimignano were originally constructed to keep out the marauders and warring factions.
Nowadays, the Italian cities with walls are cities that breathe history and are evidence of their long and defensive history
Here in Coral Gables, these entrance walls still look the same as depicted in these 1940′s postcards.
What style of entrances do you have in your home town?
